Houston “The Assassin” Alexander is one of the most unique competitors in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) today. Alexander, a noted slugger, began his career with a 6-1-0-1 record, which included five strike-related finishes. This string of performances earned Alexander a shot in the UFC®, and he made the most of it.
Alexander instantly became a fan favorite from the moment he made his iconic debut at UFC® 71 in 2007. Coming into the fight as the underdog, Alexander shocked millions by quickly defeating top UFC® light heavyweight contender, Keith Jardine, in a mere 48 seconds. After clinching two impressive first round TKO victories, the first over Jardine and the second over Alessio Sakara , Alexander hit a rough stretch that consequently lead to his release from the UFC®.
Alexander’s “rough stretch” was very short lived and proved to be nothing more than a minor setback. Alexander, now (13-6-0-2), is back on track and stronger than ever. He has not lost a bout since January of 2010 and continues his steady rise back to the top, methodically claiming one impressive victory after another. Houston is also involved with The Stars Agency as a model and actor and currently has a role in the Danny Trejo movie Vengeance.
Outside of the Cage
A native of East St. Louis Illinois, Houston’s career took off after relocating to Omaha, Nebraska. He organized the ‘Scribble Cru;’ a collection of graffiti artists, as well as the ‘Alliance Allstar B-boys and B-girls’ (who have toured with legends: Ice T, Salt & Pepa, Foxy Brown, Juvenile, Vanilla Ice, Tone-Loc, Tech N9Ne, Da Brat, Trina and many more). Alexander then hosted ‘Tuesday Night Titans,’ a weekly rap battle, which spurred Houston to create a record label, Hustle Music, and he has been involved with Omaha’s underground hip hop scene ever since. Alexander is also involved in the ‘Culture Shock School Tour,’ a program in schools that teaches kids about the history of hip hop culture, from graffiti art and the music scene, to break dancing and rap. The program also focuses on the origins and originators of the culture. Today he continues to keep up with his love of music as a local DJ and on-air talent at KOPW Power 106.9 on Sunday nights from 6-8 p.m. on ‘Power Mix Sunday Night.’
When he is not working with music, Houston is busy training and fighting as one of the hardest-working athletes in the sport, and he also dedicates any of his spare time giving back to the local community.
Houston was a part of groups such as the Boys & Girls Club; Girls Inc, and Mad Dad’s and was a keynote speaker for their ‘Points of Light’ presentation for former president George Bush Senior. Alexander is now a Fatherhood Specialist for Lutheran Family Services and helps to develop healthy relationships with new fathers through mentoring and child development. He also instructs M.O.V.E. a fitness class held at the local YMCA in Omaha, where he teaches members of the community how to properly maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle.
Alexander, a single father of seven children, is always quick to point out that no matter where his career may lead, his family will always come first. Every choice he makes will always revolve around providing for his children. In 2001, Alexander donated one of his kidneys to his oldest daughter, a true example of his devotion to his family.
